"Daddy, I want that"

In 1992 I walked away from that Arabian Horse Industry for good!

I made a decision that I would not take on anymore youth riders and their parents and I wanted to have nothing to do with the equitation part of training and showing as well and I wanted nothing more to do with the western/English "pleasure" part of it.

It was just a mentality that I was not wanting to deal with. The win at all costs without regards to the horses well being. Sanding their feet to a high gloss and shaving the horses damn near bald was in my mind, not in any way a benefit to the horse. But that was not all!

In 1992 I had a couple of youth riders showing in the Regional Arab show in Houston TX. We had 5 horses at the show, one of my riders was showing in the HUS class and my other rider was showing in the reining classes as well as the western pleasure classes. I had 3 adult amateur riders showing as well.

We would get to the show grounds early in the morning to take care of our horses and ride them around the grounds so they could have a good look around.

There was a trainer there with a horse that was also being shown by a youth rider who was friends with my riders. When we were in the arena working our horse this trainer was also in the arena working the girls mare as we left the arena the trainer was still working the mare who by now was sweating profusely. The trainer, in my opinion was abusive with his extensive use of the dressage bat that he loved to carry everywhere he went. Me being who I am said something to the trainer, who at that time decided to take the mare back to the barn.

Less than an hour later I saw this same trainer back on this mare in another arena working the shit out her. The whole time he was doing this, his rider and her parents stood by the rail and watched as this mare was worked into the ground. Finally a few hours later the trainer took the mare back to the barn to let her rest. From what I have heard the mare remained tacked and tied in her stall, but I am not sure of that. After the classes ended that day, this same trainer took this same mare out into the main arena and worked her well into the morning before putting her up. By the start of the days showing, this mare was dead!

And I will say that she was a really nice mare.

As far as to what actually killed this mare I am not sure and will not comment on it, though I have an idea what it was and that should be obvious. But that is not the point of this.

The point is, this was a mare that this girls father, from what I am told had paid over $120,000 so this girl could compete at a level that she wanted to compete at. When my youth rider went up to offer her friend her condolences on her mare. This young 12-14 year old girl looked my rider in the eye, smiled and said "That's OK, my daddy will buy me another horse".

That made me sick. Never in my life would I have ever imagined a child being taught that a life has only a monetary value and nothing more. I realized that day that there is a mind set out there that we have to win at all costs, no matter what.

But why?

I can tell you the I want my daughters to have everything they want or need, but they have to know that we can not always give them that. I refuse to buy them a win at a horse show or anywhere else. They are going to have to learn to lose graciously and win humbly. As do the rest of my riders. Yes we are into showing again and I do like to win, but I also know how to lose as that is part of this game.

Like everyone else, they are going to have to work hard and develop the skills that will help them achieve their goals. I still see it all of the time at shows, parents sparing no expense to give their child an over all advantage over other kids just for a blue ribbon.

I have heard parents tell trainers that they have spent a lot of money, so their precious child better win. It's no wonder trainers try to cheat their way into championships.

I agree about looking after the rain. We saw a few places in the pnw that had coveted arenas. They were not really large but big enough for cutting practice and big enough to work horses. I also need to make sure there will be a clientele as well.

When we bought this place I filled the barn before it was built. And there needs to be a really good school system

I've seen covered arenas with standing water. It must indicate a larger drainage problem, and I bet it's a bitch to fix!

JohnieRotten said...

It can be a bitch to fix. Bit I have done it a lot. We just really want to live where it is cooler and greener.

PrairieFarmer said...

NHM - Excellent point on drainage! Drainage can make a HUGE difference. That is actually one of my big pet peeves about horse people in the PacNW - so many of them keep horses in paddocks that are just complete mudholes in the winter! Drives me nuts. There are plenty of places in the northwest with excellent pasture - just because you own a piece of property doesn't always mean it's suited for horses! Worst is when I see a few horses in a densely forested area that has had the understory mowed down but that's it. A dark, damp hole. So basically destroyed the forest and made a shitty place to put a horse - dark, muddy, nothing to graze on but some psychedelic mushrooms...(Not) Happy Horses!

NO, JR... you guys should check out Indiana. There are always nice horse places for sale for under $300,000 and we don't get much snow.

Grass is green & lush. Not many drylots here. Hay is cheap and good. Water? No problem.

However, there are too many WP people around.

(Psst...Hey JR...How do you like all these imaginary internet woman fighting over you!!!! Here! No, here! No, my place is best - HERE! Hee-hee!).

Psssssst... Mr Rotten. You could always move to Phelan.

I hear they need a good trainer in those parts.

PrairieFarmer,

I looked at about 7 boarding places when I knew I would be taking my boy home. This was in January, and it had dumped for a couple weeks and then dried out for about 5 days.

The worst place and NOT the cheapest by far, had standing water in the covered arena after DAYS of no rain. There were also many other issues including smoking allowed in the barn (I smoke and I was horrified), a barn cat that BIT me (I actually went in for a tetanus booster), a rooster sitting on a horse eating its meal (there was obviously some kind of edible bug on the horse), tales of the soon to be fired night guard, a mare covered in red paint because she escaped (HOW?) and rubbed all over the stallion barn, the "self-care" boarding area with a mini that had slipper hooves and black water to drink, etc. The final straw however, as I was already attempting to graciously escape, was when a man came running over yelling "We have a bloody horse! We have a bloody horse!" Um, OK, thanks, I'll let you know!

The place I ended up at was the least muddy, closest to my house, has trails (if I ever get to that point), and the cheapest!

Who Said That...completely nonplussed here. Don't stir it, unless you plan to back it. A few of us are sick of it. I notice you are also another with no profile.

Besides, from what I could gather from JR's statements he wants out of the heat. Sick of the desert. Keep up would you.

Horspoor -
Did I mention you rock? And could you come work over my kids???? The 3 year old latest technique we've been exploring tonite, whack big sister upside the head and then sign a song "I'm so sorry, I love you! I'm so sorry, I love you!" which then drives big sister nuts and she complains, so little sister whacks her upside the head and then signs song "I'm so sorry, I love you! I'm so sorry, I love you!."..."Stop signing! It's annoying!" Whack!
Meanwhile, Mommy sits "nonplussed" (love that word), thinking, okay, proper parenting response would be?????

PrairieFarmer said...

Okay...can't spell tonite "sign" and "signing" is "sing" and "singing..." Beer now.

horspoor said...

LOL...I think I'd love your 3 year old. Especially as she's your 3 year old. I could spoil her, have fun and give her back full of sugar. She'd love me.

How old is big sister?

PrairieFarmer said...

Big sister is five. And amazingly patient with little sister, actually. I think if the two girls had been turned around in birth order - well, I don't think #2 would have been as nice of a big sister as she has got!
My mother told me that she was driving them to the pool recently and the 3 year old starting saying to big sister, "My daddy is faster than your daddy..." Big sister says, "but we have the same daddy...Little sister says "My daddy is smarter than your daddy..." Big sister says, "But we have the same daddy, the same one." Little sister says "My daddy plays better than your daddy..." Big sister says "we are sisters, we have the same Daddy!" Little sister says "I love my daddy more than you love your daddy!" Big sister says, "wah-wah-wah Mimi MAKE HER STOP!"
She's a pill that one. And the worst part of it, everything she does is so freakin clever that I'm having a hard time disciplining her because I'm just so amused/impressed!

SFTS said...

Don't worry about WST, horspoor. Bitter, jealous, anonymous people are a source of amusement for me these days more than anything.

Though, I think it would be terrific to have a good Cutting horse trainer in these parts. Over here in the North part of Pinon Hills, though, not over there in Phelan. It's much nicer here. :)

horspoor said...

Whew. I don't know. I only have the one son. And that's plenty, believe me. If he'd had a sibling to play off of... I guess I'd pray he was the oldest. lol Wicked, dry sense of humor on him.

When he was 11 or 12 he was in a school function and they were doing 'Who's Line Is It Anyway'. The kids all got asked, 'A parent's worst nightmare.' Kids are saying things like, "Mom I got all F's. Dad, I wrecked the car." My son comes out to the middle of the stage...does a spin, grabs his crotch and says in a high voice, "Hi, I'm Michael Jackson." I sunk a little in my seat. Had to laugh, but dang.

Or when he was doing an improv with Dell Arte...he goes into a spiel that starts with, "Don't hate me because I'm son of bin Laden...." Not real appropriate for an 11 year old. Adults were roaring, then silent...omg this is a kids show.

PrairieFarmer said...

JR - I don't think I've had either of those...I'm a lager sort of gal, however, so perhaps the Land Shark? Actually my husband makes beer - a nice little pony keg of ClearLake Lager just for me. Yum. Yum. He also makes a German one every once in a while that I adore. We have not one, not two, but FOUR beer taps in our house. And a huge pile of empty wine bottles outside the porch because hubby also makes wine so recycles the wine bottles. This makes me feel a bit embarrassed at times, really, we don't drink nearly as much as I would like to!!! But then I recall, I don't really care what people think! And go get a mug of beer/glass of wine and sit on the porch and watch the great big orange moon rising over the prairie hilltop. Gorgeous night.

PrairieFarmer said...

Horspoor - Your stories made me think of a great family story, and since I'm feeling chatty tonite...
Back in the 50s my great uncle Jim Henry was a young lad struggling in school. Jim Henry didn't have a lot going for him as far as the excelling in school department. His name, to start, was a detraction. His first name was Jim, last name was Henry, but he was always referred to with first and last name - Jim Henry. Never just Jim, even as a kid... And this is always said with kinda a drawl on the JJIIMMM part, and quick on the Henry. So JJJIIIMMM Henry. Not a name that graced a future nobel price winner.
Secondly, he came from a long line of dyslexic men. My father (his cousin), to this day is a horrible speller. And can't say a lot of words - like he says "chimley" instead of "chimney" and, well, don't even ask him to try and say "aluminum" (we do it sometimes just for giggles).
Thirdly Jim Henry's adoring mother and single parent, Jeanette Henry, was admired by all in our small town community. Admired for tough grit, her hard-working determination and mostly her amazing verbal command of all the nasty language there was to be had. The women could swear with the best of them! And in a BIG LOUD BOOMING VOICE.
So, poor Jim Henry had a lot of strikes against him in kindergarten. He had a sympathetic teacher, however, that decided that Jim Henry just needed a bit of "encouragement" to shine and when it came time for the annual school play gave Jim Henry the star role. He was to play the "Jack" in a Jack in the Box production. He would hide in a large box, and at the opportune time, when commanded by his classmates, pop out to the cheers and applause of the audience.
The big evening came. The whole town was there. The big moment comes...
"Pop out Jim Henry Pop Out!" His class chants.
No Jim Henry.
Confusion, pause...they try again. "Pop out Jim Henry Pop Out!"
Again, nothing. The audience is enthralled. What could be happening? Murmurs through the crowd, the teacher looks concerned. Okay, one more time, louder this time.
"POP OUT JJJJIIIMMM HENRY POP OUT!"
And from the the box, comes the high pitched, yet amazingly booming loud voice of 5 year old Jim Henry.
"THIS FUCKING GOD-DAMN JESUS H. CHRIST STUPID ASS PIECE OF OWL SHIT BOX WON'T CRAPPING OPEN!!!!!"

HP I haz a feeling this is going to be a real WTF!?! moment for you later in life.lol

Anyway I bathed and clipped two this morning. Loaded and delivered 3. Picked up and delivered another. Picked up another load of alfalfa. Tore my hand wicked bad yesterday on that devils blend nylon baling twine.
Sat through part of a crap auction to get some surplus hay.
Spent about 6 hours in the truck. Only had time to pee once.
Met with some folks about real equine related issues.
Looked at another jumper prospect. He is a cutey but not enough for me.
Looked at a 5yr old cutting mare that is Smart Little Lena and Colonel Freckles bred. Really digging the mare and she is a steal and gorgeous.
So all in all another productive day in the world of equines where I am recognized as a professional.
Oh and I did take a bath after doing evening chores.
I know how much everyone loves a play by play.
But the one thing I never did do today was address the queen of bullshit in any direct manner.
And I had a cheeseburger.
Oh and wrote this. And apparently missed a lot of calls.

horspoor said...

Nah Dena. Really takes a lot for me to have a WTF moment. I use it for effect. lol

PrairieFarmer said...

Dena...So this is probably the wine talking (I switched to a nice class of chard)...But I just want to say I love the way you write. At least when you are not on the "avenging angel" warpath which gets too tiresome for me.
You have such a rhythm and flow to your prose. A real "voice" as they say.

Dena said...

Okay PF that was the best one yet...The funny thing is I am absolutely certain you have more.
ROFLMAO

horspoor said...

Love the story PF.

PrairieFarmer said...

Oh yeah. Loads more. One of my "one of these days I'm going to" do things is write a book with all the family tales. But first a few folks have to die (like my grandma, who features significantly in many of them, and usually not in the way she would expect!).

Dena said...

Why PF...I am at a loss...and truly flattered.
Does this mean I may remain inflammatory?
On occasion?
Because I find inflammatory is so much less stressful to my delicate constitution.
I have a very low tolerance for bullshit that is not labeled as bullshit.
And sometimes I just get in a mood to play.
For fun.
Take no prisoners and leave no scars kind of fun.
And you know what PF? I...I...reeeeaaaaallllyyyy dooooooo...want world peace...*sighs*sniffs*and wipes the prerequisite tear from one eye*

PrairieFarmer said...

I really love the term "Owl shit" which was a favorite of my great-aunt and the other "swearing" relatives. Have you ever looked at "owl shit," which I would assume to be a reference to an owl pellet? As far as a derogatory term, well, that is pretty darn nasty. A bunch of bones and hair and icky stuff all regurgitated together in a nasty little ball? That's good swearing there.
My great aunt would really get into saying that one alot. Along with Jesus HHHHH Christ. (really, what does the "H" stand for? Humble? Hell? Howdy?). And she would say things like "it's colder than a witch's tit today." She was great. Miss her to this day. One of a kind.

horspoor said...

LOL 'Holy' PF...it stands for holy. lmao

Hey I like a good spat, take no prisoners, leave no scars. Agreed. I don't like it when it gets too personal, or too nasty. It is like debating, or counting coup. No big.

And Dena...when have you ever not been inflammatory...sometimes I take half a bute just to read your posts. lmao

PrairieFarmer said...

Well, Dena, I've been following your posts long enough to figure you can only dance for so long away from the flame!
Sometimes writing about the simpler things can be, perhaps, not as quick to flow from the impassioned fingertips!. But I do enjoy your posts the most when they are a bit, easier, so to speak. And just as relevant, to my mind, at least.
As far as being inflammatory - well, I find Preparation H works well for many people, although, preferring more natural remedies I myself have always leaned towards witch hazel...Applied topically of course....
WAH-HA-HA and LOL if you didn't get it!
(Amusing myself, if nobody else here...).

Dena said...

HP may I presume you wish to tussle? Making such an inflammatory and completely unfounded accusation against me?
Because those are very strong words from a woman who admits to a whole lot getting by her.
And I feel they were said with conviction.
Half a bute?
Really?

horspoor said...

Half a bute. Yep. Figure a whole horse bute would be a lot even for a woman of my size. Hard on your kidneys.

horspoor said...

Oh, and make sure you drink a lot of water if you take bute.

PrairieFarmer said...

Holy! Oh duh. Lack of Christian education showing here. I once went to a performance of Jesus Christ Superstar and I had to get a show synopsis booklet because I couldn't follow the story. Who was this mean ole King guy and what the heck did he have against all the poor little boy babies????? Raised quite the little pagan I was.

Dena said...

PF I love Witch Hazel. But I have not been that kind of inflamed since my last pregnancy.

PrairieFarmer said...

Hee-hee. Yeah, that was what did me in too!

horspoor said...

Isn't Witch Hazel and astringent? Don't they put it in liniments? Serious question here. Not messing.

PrairieFarmer said...

Witch Hazel - The bark and leaves are astringent; the extract, also referred to as witch hazel, is used medicinally. Extracts from its bark and leaves are used in aftershave lotions and lotions for treating bruises and insect bites. Witch-hazel helps to shrink and contract blood vessels back to normal size, hence its use as the active ingredient in many hemorrhoid medications. It is also a common treatment for postpartum tearing of the perineum. The seeds contain a quantity of oil and are edible. Also good for treating acne.

Love the internet...Also there are many that are quite pretty ornamental plants as well. Lovely for mid winter interest as they flower usually in January.

Who Said That? said...

Horspoor, I can most assuredly stand with the best of them despite my 'missing' profile and I clearly have nothing to be jealous of as the coffe can queen herself suggests. I should have known better than to stir the pot. I will try to do better in the future. I promise you that. Yes I doubt Mr Rotten would like the climate there.

horspoor said...

Thanks PF.

horspoor said...

WST, thanks. I'm not really a stick in the mud most times. It has just gone on too long, and disrupts anything else being discussed. And as some of it is being handled in the courts...this is a really innapropriate place to vent about it. But hey, I could be wrong. As Dena pointed out...I miss a lot.

horspoor said...

charlienchico...Cottonwood and Anderson by Red Bluff? Pretty hot and dry too. But in comparison to Phoenix it might seem okay to JR.

JR Cottonwood and Anderson are more like Prescott or Flag. I've thought about moving inland that direction. Less expensive than the coast. Lots of horse stuff going on. Skeet Gould is in Red Bluff. You'd like him. He owned Camiseta Badger. Straight up, no nonsense guy.

charlienchico said...

There are some places out Cottonwood way that flood irrigate and it's pretty lush and green. We cruised there a year ago June and I remember thinking how nice it was. Red Bluff seems hotter and drier to me. One of our 'rules' was never buy a place 'til you've seen it in January (floods) and August (hot). Right now our area is looking pretty hot and dusty- but you can hit the foothills, not too far away and balance it out a bit.

horspoor said...

I picked up a Double Doquiri daughter over at Skeet's a couple years ago (for a student) in July or August..omg it was hot. We sat in the shade at a picnic table under an oak...even the flies were in the shade. Here, if you get in the shade, no flies. Not there...they are looking for a cooler spot too.

charlienchico said...

Yes, we do get hot. And if I remember correctly you're on the coast so that makes it a major shocker for you, usually we get the chance to acclimate. I do like to have it warm enough to enjoy the pool. My family is in Cloverdale, I think the climate there is perfect, but you pay for it also.

Johnnie, come to N. MI. Jan and Feb suck but the rest isn't too bad. Summers are wonderful. This summer has been very cool, only a few days above 75 or so but usually a week in late July and the first week of August it can get as high as 95. Falls are spectacular. Springs are so so , takes a while for the leaves/flowers to appear. But still rideable, etc, sometimes as early as March, although you could ride in the arena year round, I think, even if it was outside. Two or three big equestrian centers up here and horse farms going very cheaply nowadays. Michigan is hard hit by the economy but people are always looking for good trainers.

Back off, y'all. JR and the kidlets are coming up here to the PNW with PF and meeee. We will even allow him to bring CNJ.

Cloudy and 65 today. Just right, IMO.

Diagnosis this, please.

HELP! - I am at my wits' end and have booked a full exam for this mare tomorrow - to my boss' consternation as I am once again spending her $$$$.... and she has not seen all these issues.

Candy came in December - heavy in foal, pasture bred and her previous owner/breeder in Texas was clueless as to any breeding dates. She is an American Shetland/ AMHR (taller mini registry). The BO likes to show and drive them. Very refined. Very elegant. All through her pregnancy she made me nuts - she would lay on her back with her feet in the air. Obviously in discomfort... but not colic in the traditional sense as she continued to poop normally and had normal gut sounds... ate well, drank well, regular worming ... everything.

She finally foaled in late March... and I was relieved - thinking the upside-down stuff was likely ulcers/pregnancy based and would ease off. It did - for a while - but now is back and worse. I have been weaning her colt off her - he could care less and runs and plays with his friends. She is in an adjoining pasture with some friends - and yet unlike every other mare I have ever dealt with is not celebrating her freedom... nor is she of the small percentage who have fretted and paced and called.

She is doing... nothing.
Standing.
Laying down.
Occasionally upside-dpwn.
Depressed, IMO - and not about the colt.

If she does not move around that full bag of hers will start giving her problems... I escorted her out through the far gate to the end pasture that has been closed off through the hot weather - so it now actually has a teeny bit of grass which the rest of the horses are enjoying... and she just stood there. The others ignored her. I went back to the barn to clean stalls - and 10 minutes later she was back where she started... laying down up here next to the top gate. Not by the fence near the colt - he is definitely not the issue. She has been on Gastroguard for a long while now... if it was just ulcers IMO there should have been an improvement instead of things getting worse.

Soooo... WTF is wrong? She is obviously depressed. In some kind of pain. Even though she is a bit of a drama queen about everything - overreactive and hypersensitive - I know she is hurting.

I think this will all lead to a visit to the equine hospital... but tomorrow I want an ultrasound and full exam and blood pulled... I am worried that I am going to find her down and dead at some point.

A bleeding ulcer?
Tumour?
Enterolith?

I need an answer. SHE needs an answer.
And as I type she is just standing there quietly by the water bucket... while below her in the pasture there is a fiesty game of Chase Me going on... tails flagging, loud snorting, much bucking and tearing around... and she is completely oblivious to it. A week ago, she would have joined in on all the foolishness... but still doing her upside down thing occasionally.

Something is wrong and has been so ever since she came. Maybe even before that as she was basically a pasture horse in Texas and rarely handled/touched... or, I am thinking, observed.

Think good thoughts for Candy ....and please share any ideas/thoughts you may have. Does any of this ring a bell about something you have seen/experienced?

Fig

Sounds like an enterolith or an ulcer. Without an exam though.

My read mare Johnie did the same thing after she had a sand colic a few years ago. She ended ip with am ulcer and dropped 300 lbs. She woulday in the pasture on her back almost all day. Someone driving by stopped to yell me they thought she was dead. She wasn't.

The vet told me grass hay only, and she wouldn't touch it, when she did eat it she only ate a little bit and continued to drop weight. Then one I rembered that after colic surgeries on horses, we gave them alfalfa the potassium would stimulate the gut. So I gave that to her, she started to eat and gain the weight back. I did give some ulcer guard as well and I also gave her yogurt which is a probiotic. The bitch wouldn't eat probiotic any other way.

horspoor said...

FF I'd check her for sand. Enterolith does sound like a possible. They'll get in odd positions to relieve the pressure, or make them move. Or she's just weird. lol

My little Iris the Virus had gas colic. Not even bad gas colic. She acted like she was dying. Took her to the vet. Worried it was something serious. Her vitals weren't even really elevated...but oh the drama with Iris. The vet was her best friend in the world etc. She was so sweet to the vet, total pocket pony while she didn't feel well.

Once she felt better after she'd been treated, the vet couldn't catch her. I had to catch her for the vet to check her vitals before we went home. Iris is such a shit sometimes.

FF, definitely have the ultrasound and give a thought to a trip to the hospital for an MRI if they have the capability. If she's been on ulcer meds for as long as it sounds like, there has to be another answer.

My guess would be stacked enteroliths that shift around so she gets relief when she lays on her back. The blood panel should also show you something if that's not it...

Poor thing. You and Candy are both in our thoughts and prayers!! :(

WildCaballo, are you sure you want to go there?!

Cliffs Notes version:

Cathy/FHOTD went to Washington DC with some rescuers, including Jill Curtis from Shiloh (IIRC) on a lobbying day about horse slaughter. ("Horses on the Hill" blog post).

During Cathy/FHOTD's absence a poster named Shelly who logs in as "Dontyouridenofuglyhorse" accuses Cathy/FHOTD of having an affair with her husband, which turns out to be her boyfriend.

It all gets so sordid and messy, criss-crossing several forums (COTH, FiSH, Horsedopia, etc) and a few blogs with all sorts of wild accusations being thrown all sorts of directions to the point that Cathy/FHOTD decided to remove the comments section from her blog for the meanwhile.

There is more, but it's too exhausting to go into right now. :)

Get some rest!
Here, have some mint tea...
Oh, never mind.
It's early where you are.
Good night!

Yeah, probably wasn't very professional of me to post it either. But damn! And $50 a lesson. lol Going rate here is anywhere from $25 to $60. You get a lesson from a GP rider/trainer for $60 here.

So, whoever this is, thinks they are in the ballpark of that, with their unsuitable horse for a beginner lungeline lesson? GAWD help me. lol

CL ads are there to be posted - and noticed. Once one puts an ad out there - all kinds of responses can be expected. Usually all the "good" ones are flagged and gone before I get a chance to peek at them, though.

Candy... yes - she is weird. Even most of the other horses think so and avoid her. But this has me stymied. All the classic colic symptoms... staring at her sides, pawing, parking out, some rolling... and yet she continues to poop easily and eat and drink. Add in the prolonged periods of upside-down-ness though and it gets weirder.

Vet just left. I had already checked for sand. We U/Sed just to eliminate any reproductive issues. All was fine. Drew blood. Listened and poked and prodded. She has only been on the ulcer meds since after she foaled and the problem persisted... never was in Texas but as I said they may simply not have noticed anything weird. The old owner did say she was "not friendly" which I figured meant she was crrrrrazzzzy wild and hard to catch etc. That is partly true... she is hard to catch. Terrible for shots etc. but you can just do a light fingergrab twitch on her nose and she stops fussing immediately... then you can let go of her nose and rub her face gently and she will not act up again. . And don't you even THINK of touching her back feet... I am working on that.

But anyway - the next step after the blood results come back will be to go to Pilchuck (equine hospital in the area) for xrays to check for enteroliths.. which apparently I pronounced wrong as it amused the vet. Maybe it is a Western Canadian thing - we have always said en-TAYR-oh-lith but this vet says EN-terr-oh-lith.

To-may-toes, to-matt-toes...

Back to the barn. Thanks for all the suggestions and good thoughts!

horspoor said...

Yeah, I'd of laughed too. Although, when I say it fast I tend to drop the t. so it sounds like en ero lith.

TheTruth said...

Yes Stacy, I will continue to tell the truth.

I had a difficult time deciding wether or not to rejoin the conversation that I had instigated. I had to accept my responsibility for my engagement of you on a public forum (out of frustration), and the stark reality that I am dealing with, (IMHO) a sociopath.

SFTS, your are a very, very intelligent person with a superficial charm. You speak and write in an impressive and confident manner. Problem is that you come off in real life and net as authoritarian, arrogant and condescending.

After all that has happened since I met you and your family, I have come to realize that you are unable to feel any remorse or guilt. It has taken me a long time to even begin to understand how seriously I have to take you. It is not just that you are a pathological liar. You believe your lies. To you it is reality. That sucks....

I will respond to your grandiose, shameless, no feeling of guilt posts with only the facts that I have full knowledge of.

First off, the Court Order. Your civil case against me. You never had to fight to get access to your property. Yes, you went and filed a case against me stating that I had not allowed you access to your property. The reality is (something you are incapable of knowing), is that you did not respond to numerous attempts at contacting you, then after about 4 months, your husband texted me asking for a power tool that I had given him for work that he had done on the property. I gave him that tool. I also pleaded that you get your tore up trailer, deserted, non-operational car on ramps, rubbish, clutter and trash can full of human feces off my property. He came two subsequent times and picked up loads of your belongings and his old tools you guys left behind. Anybody understands that with the 60 days you had to move, you took 99% of your belongings that had any real value to you. My only mistake at this juncture was not being fully schooled in civil law. Since you have been sued by countless property owners, you were fully aware of the laws that protect squatters.

My offer at the time was clean up your disgusting mess, get my property looking like it did before your family moved onto my property and you could have everything you left, (after having 60 days to move with the sheriffs assistance), except for your arena. Once you paid me for the eviction and some storage you would get back the one thing you had of any value that you left. (Your arena).

Since the evection papers stated that I was entitled to $16.00 a day in storage, I thought that I was protected as a property owner and thought that I was being more then fair. Turns out that if I had your experience in civil court I would of known that I had to actually push the storage into a judgement and then do what I did. So in that part I was wrong. BUT, you went to court and actually lied.

You told that court that I had not allowed you on my property to get your belongings for 10 months. Due to the fact that your pathology runs so deep you believe your lies. But your husband, daughter, my family and all visitors to my property know that you are lying.

Because of a dangerous aspect of your illness, your manipulative and effective conning, coupled with your obvious knowledge of the civil court process, (and my lack of this process), you were able to fool a commissioner as well. Such is life.

TheTruth said...

There are so many lies that I need to address in your posts. I will do exactly that over the next few days. Until then I will close with these few notes. No matter what empty victory that you feel you will achieve, it does not change what will continue to happen to you. You and your husbands failure to form and execute a realistic life plan has led you to a parasitic life. You will continue to receive what you have received over the past 20 years. That does not bring me any enjoyment. As a matter of fact it is very, very sad.

As a matter of fact, I pray for you and your family. Unfortunately I am not a saint and I will not sit idly by while you attempt to use another family as your speed bump in life.

While this nightmare will pass for my family, you will only move on to your next nightmare. You are incapable of love, peace and the one thing you most crave, acceptance.

Respectfully,

Jack Tally

SFTS said...

Jack ~ haven't you gotten the memo? NO ONE HERE CARES about your bullshit and lies?

You are right about one thing. You DO need to take me seriously. You also need to research the term "Truth". That and the term "Facts".

Pathological liar..sociopath..arrogant..condescending..these things all describe you and your wife to a "t".

How about you "feeling remorse and guilt" for all that you have stolen/damaged/destroyed of ours?

Court Order/Civil Case we filed against you. We never had to fight to get access? You were attempting to extort almost $1100 from us in order for me to be able to get my arena pipe panels! We tried, from the very beginning after we moved on September 3rd, to get our belongings and were told by your sociopath wife we'd be arrested if we set foot on the property. We were always the ones who tried contacting you, though you only responded with arrogance and condescension as well as disdain for the law, and only wanted us to clean up the 'mess' that YOU caused to happen. You never "pleaded" for anything, Jack. You just wanted the mess your children created, the "torn up trailer" (which was NOT in ANY way, shape or form "tore up" until your wife and children ransacked it and smashed windows in it) and not release our property.

You and your nutcase wife keep harping about "human feces". How about telling people why exactly that was? You remember, that little detail about you folks not having the common decency to allow us to use the bathroom?? Having to drive miles into town if we needed bathroom facilities, and being stuck without if it was after hours and all facilities in town were closed? Nice.

The reality is, the Court agreed with our case, and you lost. Laws protecting "squatters"?? LMAO!! Please. Talk about ridiculous and delusional. You need to get over it, Jack. You lost.

SFTS said...

>> "Anybody understands that with the 60 days you had to move, you took 99% of your belongings that had any real value to you." <<

Um, no.

We took the very bare necessities of life, the absolute minimum to bring my horses here and to be able to move into our new home. We didn't even have ANY of our jackets through the bitter cold of Winter! ALL of our warm Winter clothes were left behind! Because of your and your wife's actions, we were left only with Summertime clothing through the worst snowstorm to this area in decades. Lovely people you are.

Please do not continue to lie.

The eviction papers NEVER stated you were "entitled" to ANYTHING. That 16.67 per day you tried to rely on was what your wife claimed as a "daily rental value" of the property, which didn't even include living quarters. You always must claim an amount for DRV in an unlawful detainer filing. We have been property managers before, Jack. That's how we knew the law. Property managers/landlords have to become versed in civil law so that they may protect their tenants and themselves. The law says "reasonable" storage. That does not mean and has never meant a full declared daily rental value.

In mediation I offered to pay the fee declared by the writ and reasonable storage from the time we moved until the day I had printable proof that your wife was going to have us arrested if we came back. You laughed it off.

We lied in Court? Not by a long shot. We were simply more believable than you and your wife, and we had the law on our side, because we were right. My husband and daughter and "all visitors to your property"? *eyeroll* Jack, look in the mirror and at your psychotic wife if you would like to see liars.

Again, no one is interested in your delusional, likely drug and alcohol induced ranting.

We do expect a full accounting of what your wife has done with our missing property, including all personal paperwork, tax records and business records she stole out of my chest of drawers and my now smashed filing cabinets (in addition to the return of all our missing property and compensation for everything you have destroyed).

SJN said...

Jack, is it that your wife can't put together a coherent enough argument that you have to jump on the computer and take up this tit-for-tat bullshit? Seriously, I thought you would try to stay above that. How about getting back to business and just giving our damn stuff back, and be done with it?

Quite frankly, I am getting really tired of you, your wife and some of her friends trying to make us out to be really shitty people when we're not, We both bust our ass to make a living, we are not mooching off of anyone. Our daughter is respectful, hard working and has awesome grades. When I hear you call me or my family liars I just want to shake my head.

Like you say you're giving all of our stuff back. Just off the top of our head we have a typed list two pages long of things you have still not given back. It is so much that you as well as I know is not merely an oversight or something forgotten. I will be seeing you this afternoon and will give you that list.

In conclusion, I would appreciate you not saying we mooched off of your family since you were using all of our horse facilities, the things that I built and fixed for you and upon our moving out you told me in your opinion we were even. Also, I want a straight answer on a question I asked you straight to your face. WHERE IS OUR PERSONAL PAPERWORK?

How exactly did they rip you off?
From what I understand, and you admitted this, they didn't ask for rent or utilities, they took you and your family in, fed you, fed your horses, provided you a nice holiday season, gave gifts and so forth.
They did all this knowing you had no income.
How does that spell "con"?
Sounds like you cost them a lot of money, free rent, utilities, food.
Oh, then they evicted you. I don't guess that's free?
Please explain.

Hoof Kisser said...

Is there any reason that I should even waste my time answering someone who won't even say who they are?

Christine wrote:

That they were sincere in wanting to help a family in need from a horrific situation. That they actually "cared" about this family. That they were honest, upstanding people. I could go on.

Christine wrote:

Try tens of thousands of dollars of our personal property damaged, destroyed or missing. That's just for starters.

Christine wrote:

There was an even exchange of services rendered (which began long before we moved there, in terms of us giving them services for free) in return for letting us stay there. Quid pro quo.

Btw, they didn't feed us other than when we were invited, as "friends", to have dinner with them a couple of times, which includes at least one meal prior to our moving there. And on the horse feeding issue, again, there were but a couple of months they paid for hay which my horses consumed at their insistence, which was never requested by us nor necessary.

I did take the liberty of searching all parties names on your county court website.
The Tally's have nothing but that which involves you and yours.
The Nichols though, wow, you two have lists a mile long.
Hm, that says a lot.

Hoof Kisser said...

I'm a blogger using a different name so stop ASSuming I'm Christine.
No, don't believe you. You are inconsistant. I don't believe that people invite others to share their home for free, feed them, etc... Just to pull a scam, costing themselves money, for what? With your obvious court recorded past I would have to say no, you're not telling the whole story.
What really happened?

SFTS said...

If you are not Christine, then who are you and why are you so obsessed with our lives, "HoofKisser"??

Of course nothing for them shows up, people can have their records expunged. I have better things to do, such as working for a living and paying my bills, to worry about that. Only deeply disturbed people search out all sorts of court records for people they claim they don't even know...pretty sick.

Christine wrote:

I could care less what you believe. As if someone too cowardly to post their name and what their interest is in a situation is worthy of continued attempts at explanations, when they have already shown their bias from their first posting and who has an um, interesting syntax to their posts.

Reading back, here as well as The free speech board, shows your inconsistancies, you backpedal a lot.
What makes you say these people had their records expunged? Are they really super-secret bad-asses?
No, just another one of your lame excuses.
It's "I couldn't care less". Unless you do care, then you could care less. See how that works?
I,on the other hand, could NOT care less who you think I am. I still see you as mentally ill.

I'm so glad we don't have to do that anymore. Ivermectin was really a 'miracle drug' and revolutionized how we could care for horses. Way less invasive. You don't need a vet. Much better system.

Old jumper I rode had a terrible reaction to the IM ivermectin.
His neck swelled up, and he couldn't raise his head.

Amazing too that Dena Rodacker, who proclaims to be a rescuer and that her family "runs a horse rescue" (you remember, the one she was begging for money to support just last year) is a full blown supporter of horse slaughter as it existed in this country just a few short years ago and as it exists today in Mexico. Just incredible. With "rescuers" like that, our poor horses are going to be in a world of hurt the likes of which we haven't seen in years.

Btw, Barbara/GoLightly? Thanks for proving yourself to be the hypocrite I took you for some time ago. Deleting comments on your blog because you perceived that they disagreed with your point of view on an issue.

Gee, wasn't that something JR and that other Bitty woman bashed me for doing on my blog?

Way to go JR, impressive feat of really trying hard to look unbiased. What a credibility disaster, which is a shame (and I have no doubt the JR groupies will begin blasting me for that soon, but you know what? I couldn't care less).

Go ahead, JR ~ delete my posts. Do as you complained about me doing to another on my own blog. Do as a lack of integrity dictates.

You set up a blog for the SOLE PURPOSE of bashing, allow anonymous individuals and those with zero tact and class run roughshod over said blog (and you), and you don't expect to get called on it when you show your ass?

That you would even consider "selling" this blog to Dena Rodacker and consider her such a bosom buddy speaks volumes.

SFTS out (until another attack is launched).

Dena, I didn't say it would be as fun and entertaining, you know quantity doesn't always mean quality.

TT always comes through, doesn't it?

GoLightly said...

SFTS, why didn't you do this, as you said you would, then?

Take arguments to the Gloves Blog, as I suggested, after your first comment on my lame-ass little blog, ever. Why it's such a huge deal is beyond me..

I think JR is a frickin' genius. Makes sense to have the dissenting opinions, all in one place.
So, go ahead, again, tell me hoof-sanding is jim-dandy-fine.
Please.

SFTS said: "Gee Barbara, how about finding out what in the world you're looking at before you go into an incoherent rant about a horse you know nothing about, owned by an innocent third party?
The pinto mare in question, a client's horse who is far more sound today than she was when purchased on October of 2006. Imagine that. Almost three years under my care and she's not only still sound, but winning in the show ring ~ with better hooves than she's ever had in her life, which was recently stated by the seller's farrier.
And that picture? It was taken the day we brought her home from the seller's farm, her hooves had been shod two days before by the seller's farrier. Circa October 2006.

Good Lord. Get a frigging grip on yourself. In this blog entry, you just did what you and your little friends like to skewer Cathy/FHOTD for: Attacking an innocent person's horse and horsekeeping skills.

Amazing. Not. Consider the source..."

I said nothing about the person. I was pointing out the feet.

SFTS added this."By the way, thank you for deleting the reference to my website and my client's mare in your blog. That you included such a link in the first place was inexcusable."
Yup, that's me. I had been meaning to delete that link, that post has been up for a week. Inexcusable.

May I be excused now?

Well, okay then.

I've never heard of hoof sanding, so shoot me!
I probably shouldn't have posted a picture of a horse with next to no feet. Oh, right, they were just DONE.
I keep forgetting, horses today, have no feet. Lots of pictures out there show it. I'll find a new one, after I finish Blinging Butch.

Hippie meet Bling = The Greatest divide of all.

Yawn. The slaughter debate has started again?
Where?
I advocate kindness towards ALL animals, always have, always will.
How crewel & hypocritical of me. How pro-slaughter and pro-fear and pro-pain that makes me.. Playing on the heart strings of kind people won't stop stupid abuse. It won't stop ignorant BYB's who want a horsie. It sure makes auctions more of a golden opportunity than ever before. In SO many ways!
The market is changing.

Good luck to horses and their poor feet.

Just like women, and their poor nails.

Only horses depend on their feet to stand on.
Women simply use them for claws. Or in my case, as screwdrivers/weeders/things to be broken on a regular basis.

Big difference in function, eh?
I guess not. Polish away.

Oh, hey. In my profession trying to keep fingernail polish on is impossible. But every once in a while I feel so girly!

Pass the popcorn- this is as bad as the soaps.

GL- I was at the supply shop the other day and bought a new hoof sealant. It's called Hoof Guard. It has Kevlar fibers in it! It is supposed to seal all cracks from dirt and bacteria, keep moisture in the foot and extra wet out. It is supposed to improve the integrity of the foot and provide UV protection (because sunburned feet are such a pain). I put it on my TB with horridly shelly feet. I'd love to have him go barefoot, but he'll get sore if I try. Heck, he gets sore on hard ground even without being ridden! I'll try it for a while and let you know how well it works. My poor horses are my guinea pigs.

Well Dena...gotta agree with you. And no, you are no mental midget. Sit back and watch the show. What goes around comes around. It is just rare that we actually get to witness it.

SFTS said...

As if anyone other than Dena, GL, HP and the few who frequent and post here that are their friends would even care, CCC. You can have your little "We Love Dena" clique. It doesn't bother me in the least that I will never belong ~ heaven knows that I would never want to.

As if it mattered to me...I know what matters. Joanna and Kaede said it best last week sometime.

The only reason I am here any longer is to defend myself, my family and my business from unfounded attacks, libel and defamation.

GL ~ why did I not come back to post my comments here, knowing you would cowardly delete them on your blog, as you cannot handle a dissenting opinion there? Because I was busy getting ready to go ride horses and give lessons, you know, things we professional trainers and riding instructors actually do for a living.

It need not have been any "argument" at all, GL. Had you not made a specific, unnecessary snarky and bitchy comment about me, posted a link to my website and trashed a client of mine's horse. Not a classy thing to do, by any stretch of the imagination.

You are fully entitled to your own opinion on hoof care, hoof preparation or any other topic your little heart desires. However, bashing an innocent horse owner for something none of us presently (or since late 2006, in case you missed it the first two times I said it) involved with the horse caused (i.e., a very poor shoeing job). Didn't that sink in earlier? The God-awful shoeing job on the mare you ranted about was not caused by myself, my farrier or my client. Of course, I wouldn't expect an apology from the likes of you.

Have at it. I would rather discuss horses, training, care and other equine-related points with rational, coherent and knowledgeable equestrians. That means I am not interested in "arguing" with you in the least.

Fernvalley ~ I thought once upon a time you actually had the class that a few here lacked. This rant of yours proved me wrong.

I respected JR's wish not to post on his training blog since the moment he made such a request. Don't go there with me, I'm not in the mood. This pissing match of a sorry excuse for a blog was quite different, particularly as it's the litter box wherein a few chose to direct their juvenile and often petty attacks against me. As long as there is hounding, verbal vomit, libel, defamation and all manner of bullshit spewed here, naming or targeting myself, my family, my innocent clients and friends as well as my business, I will remain.

Carry on.

GoLightly said...

SFTS, Nope, you were busy, it seems, answering back yet more vile bile being thrown at you here, by people I don't know from my arse.
I checked. You sure you were riding? I was walking my dogs. How crewel. Took a three hour walk. Had a blast.

Never mind.

Good luck to all your horses, and try to keep in mind, we (yup, the royal we) are the kind ones.
I doubt anyone here would ever, EVER knowingly abuse/hurt/neglect an animal.
Am I wrong?
That basically kind people can get so over-wrought about kindness, is why the humane movement is stymied. Too many cooks stirring the pot.
Too many dollars to be made from the horror that IS unkindness.

It starts with basic education.
Woe is that state of affairs.

I felt the need to rant about something I'd just learned about.
My blog, I do as I wish. I am no coward, SFTS. I enjoy my tiny group of buddies.
They can read through the incoherent babble.

Grow your own buddies, I guess is what I'n saying.
As you will, on your blog, where you have followers and friends that will support you.
Why not focus on that?
Simple horsmanship skills are in every Pony Club manual.
Standardized methods of care, across ALL breeds/disciplines, would go a long way towards helping the horses.
Let's spread those words, instead of words that make make kind people like Kaede ask "Are all horse people really crazy?"

Is hoof-bling really necessary?

Still a question that deserves answered.
For Horses.

I would be more than happy to mosey on along JR, if people here would stop slinging bullshit at your invitation.

GL ~ good luck with that. I couldn't even begin to understand half of what you wrote. But let me try to decipher just a little, eensy bit.

Yes, I unfortunately had to spend some time here, too much in fact, defending against the verbal vomit. Then it became so late that I needed to get over to the barn, start working horses and giving lessons to the kids. It's about "education". Not bashing. Why do some insist that bashing is the way to get their point across? That I would like to know...and it seems to be more of an internet phenomenon.

To answer your question, is a great deal of our show preparation that goes on in many, many circles (from braiding to banding to hoof prep and polish to clipping to just about anything, including baths, other than good feed, clean cool water, shelter and love) actually something a horse needs to survive. No. It is, however, a means of standing out in the crowd of the horse show ring and one of the least "abusive" practices of all the horrors I have seen, if you feel the need to classify it as abusive. There is far, FAR worse. Ask JR. He'll tell you.

For the record, I agree about promoting and fostering good horsemanship and good horse care. Which is why I took on the task of heading up a 4-H club and nurturing tomorrow's equestrians as best I can, and why I am so active in our local horsemen's clubs as well as our local Arabian club.

It's for the horses.

Hey - now we are talking about one of my areas of expertise...

Bones - I will come to one of your fiascos anytime - and I'll bring the chardonnay... and maybe some strawberries dipped in chocolate...

You know, I even liked Kirk when it came to ST characters - one could always revel in the James Tiberius Kirk/Shatner School of Overacting...

SFTS - you do not have to defend against the verbal vomit as you say - you only become part of it by engaging in it. You encourage it. You fan the flames, you slice and dice - and then complain heartily about it and sneer at others here who lack your enthusiasm for the ongoing drama. You CAN have these picnics of yours on your blog - but I guess it is far more fun to play this shit out in front of a group of complete strangers. I would not want to do that - but to each his/her own... and yes, as I said - I do scroll.

Would you carry on as you have here at times in front of your riding students and 4H kids? Or at a club meeting? I doubt it.

There is no need to jump all over people for not liking hoof sanding - not everyone has been immersed in the show ring practices of all disciplines and seen all that... why not just discuss it calmly instead of chewing people out about it?

Somewhat connected small rant - I really really loathe black hoof polish. IMO it always looks ridiculous - no horse has black hooves! Clear polish would work on nice dark grey hooves and look better... but when QH and Paint folks use black polish on dinky feet stuck at the end of white legs... it annoys me. What a way to break up the visual "line", folks. Why would anyone want to make small feet look even smaller and less proportionate? Ick.

It bugs me almost as much as all the finicky banding on western manes and the way my fingers cramp up from far too many years of braiding for dressage and hunter... and the "tassel" fad all over western tack now. Mainly the really long ones hanging off the bottom of cinches....

Enthusiasm for ongoing drama?? A bit over the top, overdramatic, don't you think? I detest this sort of bullshit. It tends to make me cranky, in case you haven't noticed.

>>> "Would you carry on as you have here at times in front of your riding students and 4H kids? Or at a club meeting? I doubt it." <<<

Of course not, unless someone stood up and began flaming, attacking, lying about me and so forth.

On the hoof sanding issue...*I* was not the one who "jumped all over" anyone. In fact the only thing related to that issue here was based on GL's posting of last week, when she decided to add the link to my website mentioned above (which she did remove, and I thank her for that). It was *I* who was "jumped on" about the issue. I understand that not everyone has been privvy to such practices and that not everyone approves of them. There are many things in the horse show world I do not approve of. But for some to insinuate I am somehow abusing my horses and my clients' horses is out of line.

My... that sounds... appetizing. Heh.

Get thee up here to the PNW, JR - and I will treat you to some Pyramid brews or even better, the one of a kind Mac & Jack's African Amber Ale... not sold in bottles anywhere - you can get it on tap or at the brewery itself. It is on tap at Safeco Field - home of the Mariners - and the Pyramid Brewery is right across the street.

Yes, HP - that damn shoo-fly. I have seen them hanging down past knee level on shorter horses and it looks more like Arabian costume class than Western Pleasure or Eq or whatever.

Black hoof polish is my ongoing battle around here - I have no say about anything the trainer using half of the upper barn does as far as sanding goes (but she does less of it than the previous trainer)... but she loves that damn black polish that looks STOOPID. That is all she uses - white feet, striped feet - all get that annoying black patent leather look.

Candy the Exceedingly Weird Mare has had a great couple of days. About half as much fussing as usual... which would be alarming for a "normal" horse but for her was a dramatic improvement. She even ventured out into the far pasture with the herd. A visitor was concerned that we had a colic happening in the pasture this afternooon... I said calmly... bay horse - tall white stockings, wide white blaze? Yes - said the visitor. Was it upside-down, I asked? No, she said in a confused way.
PHEW! - that's great! I smiled...

The visitor probably made a few notes to pass on to the BO.... not knowing that she would get the same reaction from her!

Poor people skills...amazing how that deduction can be made based on postings to a fight blog. *shakes head* No, there is no "win" at stake in this litter box, and as a few have stated, these "discussions" don't paint any of us in a very good light at all. Yourself included.

Accountability ~ maybe you should talk to your friend Dena about that? She seems to need that lecture far more than I.

I'm going to take my leave now and get my day started. Have fun.

SFTS said...

One more thing, while the horses are now having their breakfast ~ FF, I agree with you about the black hoof polish on horses with light or parti-colored hooves. In Halter classes we can't even use black any longer, on any horse! Of course, that's because of the shenanigans in relation to Bondo on the hooves in order to make "a more perfect appearing hoof". Ugh. However, we do use black polish on the dark hooved performance horses, other than those who compete in Sport Horse Under Saddle, because the SH judges generally frown on hoof polish at all.

joanna said...

Dena- I picked up the sealant at a farrier supply shop. I asked about it, and the guys said it works well. Most of the farriers switched to it from Tuff Stuff. My only problem with it is it's so friggin' shiny.

Check out SFTS's blog, it's on the "how to groom your horse for show" post. Can't remember when it posted.
It accomplishes pleasure for the human eye, when done for show.
I have a few links to various products etc., on here

I forgot.
Credit to David Gilmour and the rest of the lads of Pink Floyd.

I also used to check the horses... listen for issues, give their stalls a look for signs of disturbances, check water bowls, count heads, get ready for turnouts. Let them know I gave a crap as to how they felt. See, I also wanted them to associate me with good things happening in my presence. You know, food?
:)

lucky witch, eh?

SFTS said...

Kallista, I'm back for a quick bite of early lunch so I'll answer you about hoof sanding.

This topic being discussed here goes back to a blog entry I did on my blog about horse show preparation, i.e., what it takes to prepare and get a horse groomed and ready to show on the higher levels, and one tiny, minute section of the article was on hoof prep. Some here took it and ran with it, as a basis to attack me for all the "abuse" I heap on my horses in getting them ready to show.

On to the topic itself, basically for the show ring we (and that encompasses thousands of horse trainers and owners) buff off the coarse very outer part of the hoof so that it gets smooth, making it more attractive when polished and so that you retain more of a shine on the hoof than an unprepared foot. Not unlike a woman getting a manicure and having her fingernails buffed to make them shine. No damage is done, but the hoof looks magnificent. :)

SFTS said...

It's amazing I know, but I can feed four horses, top off their water barrels (as cleaning and refilling is done in the evenings), check them all, spent a few moments loving on each of them and do a headstand all in under 30 minutes...I must be Wonder Woman, eh?

SFTS said...

Oh, and I can fly spray all four, put fly masks on and clean all four stalls in less than another half-hour. That would be because we clean stalls twice a day.

Oh, sorry, TMI...

Off to work more horses and give more lessons! Toodles.

Kallista said...

Thanks, SFTS. Just curious. I figured it was something like that.

JohnieRotten said...

SFTS

I am going to have to argue with you on the point that it does no damage. As one poster pointed out, horses stand on their feet 95% of their lives so the stresses on the hoof are far different than those that are put on a womans fingernail when buffed and painted. Every layer that is sanded off is another layer of protection that is removed from the foot. And sanding and polishing a foot to a high sheen is not at all natural and says nothing about a horse conformation. It actually draws your eye to what ever faults there may be on a horses feet. ie angle, club foot etc.

And yes, most farriers hate when you sand the foot so smooth and remove the layers.

But then again, when you shave the hair around a horses eye so he is completely bald aroud that eye, that only draws you to the faults that are there as well.

The varialbles that come into play when you mess with mother nature are infinite. So, the way that I feel about that bullshit with sanding the feet is that you simply do not do that.

GoLightly said...

Check water buckets, every time you fill, for rodents.
Don't ask me how I know.
I used to take care of many, many more than four.
No wonder you have so much free time;)

SFTS, you have lots of good stuff to say. Keep re-typing the manual, it will help.
I think the Pony Club Manual is worth about $35.00 Canadian, now. Way cheaper than an internet connection, but that's not how people learn anymore.
Books, young man, Books..

But hoof care is not a tiny, minute part of horse care.
Healthy hoof = healthy horse.

If you do have a "coarse, rough, ridged" outer layer to the hoof, you have an unhappy hoof.
The periople was put there for a reason.

A horse's hoof reflects his health.

Yup, really.

GL:

It disturbs me to say this, but I have to agree with Ms. LaDeDa, I can feed, check on everyone and check water in less than 30 minutes. Of course, my 4 are at 2 separate barns, but I do have a golf cart to help. This does not include the more labor intensive kinds of work. If she does have the schedule that she claims, it is doable.

My question to Ms. thingy dingy, you only have 4 horses to take care of? You have made it sound like you have a bigger operation than that. I have 4 myself, I am not a trainer, I do not board and only 1 is a retiree. Just wondering!

Oh btw Cleopatra, if you don't want to belong to this "clique" that we supposedly have, why do you keep mentioning it?

GoLightly said...

Heck, if I'd known it was four, CCC, I wouldn't have said nuttin'. It sounded much bigger.

I'd still check into the water, every single time.
:)

CCC, you also have a full time job, and a new herd of crias.
You is wonder woman..

GAWD, this word verf is a pain! Why does it take so long, this one?
This is the first one I've seen that lets you edit..
Weird, how blogger works.
Anybody know how it does?
yeah, me neither..

bhm said...

CCC,
Can I belong to your clique? Please...oh, please!

I don't want to be in GL's clique because she beats me with a big stick regularly.

bhm said...

I know what sanding and painting fingernails does to them. So, I'm very careful about what I put on or do to my horse's hooves.

CharlesCityCat said...

bhm:

Bad news, GL is in the clique but we don't allow her to beat on any insiders. If she does, we take away her chocolate.

**I now dub thee, bhm, a member of our super secret, extra-special, nanynanybooboo cliquey kinda thingy.

Dena, I hope this was okay with you, I know you are the leader and all of that, but I made an executive decision on this one, since I appear to be one of the main "little friends."

Dena said...

CCC I am fine with whatever you choose to do.
I trust your judgement in all things...

Sherry Sikstrom said...

GL, It can be done in 30 min, but If I was paying someone to "train" my horse I would like to think the priority would be to the horse not to keep popping back to see who I had pissed off on a blog.

Sherry Sikstrom said...

Hey Dena , can I be a "little friend?" feeling a little fat and frumpy today,I could stand to be thaought of as little

SFTS, I wasn't really worried about what light these posts shine on me. lol Most people here know I'm a bitch. Although, I'm usually a benevolent bitch (lmao). I've never made any bones about it.

However, I am accountable for my actions. Always have been. If I fuck up...I admit it, own it, hopefully learn from it and move on.

Nobody is a saint. We all make mistakes, we all have character flaws. Your character flaws stand out in your posts to the point of unbearable. Especially since you are unwilling to ever admit you've erred, or have any flaws.

I'm not asking for some sort of confession or atonement from you. Don't want it. It doesn't affect my life.

Delusions of grandeur. Yup, pretty much sums it up for me.

bhm said...

All hail Dena the great! Dena doesn't make me grovel like GL does.

SFTS said...

I understand that mindset JR, though I respectfully disagree.

Both of my farriers are in agreement and my veterinarian, who does team roping competitively (and excels), also agrees that no harm whatsoever has come to any of my horses' hooves from the level of sanding which we do. My 21 year old mare who's been shown since the age of 8, and my 24 year old gelding who's been shown since he was 2 1/2 months old and have always been completely sound and healthy also support this finding. One would think that in each instance, had light buffing and sanding been detrimental or harmful in any way it would show in the health of their feet. No trace. They have excellent hooves of an outstanding quality.

You are right, hoof prep and polishing does draw attention to the hoof. When you have horses with good feet and well shod horses, that is not an issue to be concerned about. You're also right that it is not "natural", but neither is going around the arena, cutting a cow, performing reining maneuvers, jumping fences, doing a dressage test or most of the other things humans do with their horses.

GL, I do know about the rodent-in-the-water-barrel checking myself! The local ground squirrels have a knack for trying to drown themselves in our horses' water. :( There are no other good water sources, so the poor things need to drink somewhere. I'd put them out a trough, but no one wants me to attract them to come over.

Four........the number of my own personal horses which I care for entirely on my own (with the help of my incredible daughter). Fortunately for me, there is staff to care for, feed, water and clean stalls for the training horses who do not reside on my place.

My own horses have very healthy feet. Most of my clients' horses do as well. Thankfully we have an awesome team of farriers and veterinarians, and IMO the best advice from one of the best teams in the world, plus I am blessed to have phenomenal veterinary resources and specialists available.

HP, I own up and admit when I fuck up, too. Such as trusting people I never should have trusted. I blew it royally on that count. One of my biggest flaws is that I am too trusting, I allow myself to be taken advantage of, and it happens frequently. I'm also very often far too nice, far too accommodating and bend over backwards for people which lends itself to that being taken advantage of thing.

No, I am not perfect, nor have I ever said nor implied I was. We all make mistakes. I've made plenty, and have thankfully learned from those experiences. In fact, I am still learning.

"Delusions of grandeur". Okay, if you say so.

>>> "If I was paying someone to "train" my horse I would like to think the priority would be to the horse not to keep popping back to see who I had pissed off on a blog." <<<

FV, that was a low class, bullshit cheap shot. As I said before, I used to think better of you, that you were above such a thing.

My clients are quite happy, thanks. They're pretty damned thrilled with the results produced, too (in both horses and riders). But thanks for your concern.

[........didn't flying fig at one point mention how she can go work some horses, and periodically pop in to check the computer...I guess it's only a sin if I'm the one doing so ~ but whatever........]

I just love how you take something and spin it SFTS. Rationalize anything. Make you the victim, the good guy...once again unaccountable. lmao

SFTS said...

HP, as no matter what I say, no matter how I say it, you're going to find fault, there is nothing more on that count to discuss with you. If you refrain from taking cheap shots and generally throwing jabs my way, I'd be happy not to even remotely try to discuss anything with you anymore.

GoLightly said...

Oh, good, two farriers and a vet. Does she do her own nails?
Quorum..

But you still prefaced your discourse with "your farrier may not..."
Hmmm.
Confusing, to say the least. Who do you trust?

I dunno. I've been cruising some sites of horses with pretty godawful looking feet. It seems pretty split out there, and only in the halter divisions that aren't hunter jumper... I shudder to think of someone with no knowledge of horseflesh, wielding one of these power tools.
A little bit is a lot.
Every week, every month? Oye.
I don't know.
Pictures are good.
I've been thinking about it. I have lots of 0.25" thick wood and acrylic. If I sanded it, lightly, every day, I wonder what the thickness would be in a month?
Oh, boy, a science experiment. I'll report back, calipers in hand.
See, the periople doesn't exactly grow back.. The hoof does that, all by itself..

DANG laptop battery!

STFS, how or what you think of me is hardly likely to keep me up nights , but thanks for sharing.
You often comment about all the hard work you do , yet you are on this blog fairly steady during the day. There are some days that I am having a quiet day in the office and can check in regularly ,but most days in the good weather I am out till 9 ish at night . I don't profess to be a trainer , nor do I condescend to others for their skill and experience . The hoof sanding issue absolutely floored me ,and is NOT something I would consider . I don't show for some of the very reasons JR pointed out. I have posted on this blog in total maybe a dozen times and this post specifically twice? three times . I probably would have continued to just lurk but I began to find the constant pissing match boring I guess ( or just pathetic) Really this blog is not the place to air , argue or defend your dirty laundry ,and I would hazard a guess that if you just took the high road and ignore the stuff it would go away. As far as issues of class go , how is it that your responses to me need to include offensive language?
As I said before ,I posted and politely welcomed you on your own blog. I did then and still sincerely hope that you enjoy the experience of blogging ,as it is very different than to read and post on others blogs . That said,I don't believe I will frequent your blog as your ideas of horse care and mine are a fair ways apart.Good day to you and I would hope that if you are unable to suppress your need to respond , you will at least make and effort to be a lady.

horspoor said...

This from the queen of cheapshots. Un-freaken-believable.

You started this. You're done 'discussing' with me. Get over your bad self. Pathetic.

SFTS

I am only going to point out a few things and then I am done with this coverstation ans Iwill post a new topic later tonight or tomorrow afternoon..

You seem to feel the need to explain what you are doing all day, and to be quite honest, if you would stop doing that people would net question what you are doing. This only seems to make people think that you really have nothing to do during the day. There really is nothing wrong with admitting that the bad economy has hit you too. It sure has hit me and even though I get a lot of calls about trianing, people really can not afford it now.

Do not get me wrong, I have plenty to do during the day with the horses as well as regular maintainence work. I do afterall, own my own place.

As far as the grooming thing goes, such as the sanding end of it. If you find yourself constantly defending what you are doing, then there may be something that is really wrong with it.

I am a long time QH guy and I went into the Arabians right out of high school because at the time there was more money in the Arabs. But the is one thing that has always bothered me aobut the Arabian horse industry, and that was that the training methods as well as the grooming methods always seemed child like to me. With the grooming end of it, the grooms always struck me as teens that should be home grooming their barbies.

As far as the training goes, well, I showed reiners and cow horses as a young lad and I learned to start and train horse from and old cowboy that knew what he was doing. When I got to the arabs, the trainers with the exeption of a few, were way behind in their methods. It was like they never really learned how to do things without training aids and so forth.

Now, I do not mean to offend anyone, but I just had to get that out there. I am sure that there are good arab trainers out there!

Perhaps you should file that away for your consideration.

By the way everyne I am going to get rid of th e word verification as I have had a few people mention that it is a pain in the ass!
