"Daddy, I want that"

In 1992 I walked away from that Arabian Horse Industry for good!

I made a decision that I would not take on anymore youth riders and their parents and I wanted to have nothing to do with the equitation part of training and showing as well and I wanted nothing more to do with the western/English "pleasure" part of it.

It was just a mentality that I was not wanting to deal with. The win at all costs without regards to the horses well being. Sanding their feet to a high gloss and shaving the horses damn near bald was in my mind, not in any way a benefit to the horse. But that was not all!

In 1992 I had a couple of youth riders showing in the Regional Arab show in Houston TX. We had 5 horses at the show, one of my riders was showing in the HUS class and my other rider was showing in the reining classes as well as the western pleasure classes. I had 3 adult amateur riders showing as well.

We would get to the show grounds early in the morning to take care of our horses and ride them around the grounds so they could have a good look around.

There was a trainer there with a horse that was also being shown by a youth rider who was friends with my riders. When we were in the arena working our horse this trainer was also in the arena working the girls mare as we left the arena the trainer was still working the mare who by now was sweating profusely. The trainer, in my opinion was abusive with his extensive use of the dressage bat that he loved to carry everywhere he went. Me being who I am said something to the trainer, who at that time decided to take the mare back to the barn.

Less than an hour later I saw this same trainer back on this mare in another arena working the shit out her. The whole time he was doing this, his rider and her parents stood by the rail and watched as this mare was worked into the ground. Finally a few hours later the trainer took the mare back to the barn to let her rest. From what I have heard the mare remained tacked and tied in her stall, but I am not sure of that. After the classes ended that day, this same trainer took this same mare out into the main arena and worked her well into the morning before putting her up. By the start of the days showing, this mare was dead!

And I will say that she was a really nice mare.

As far as to what actually killed this mare I am not sure and will not comment on it, though I have an idea what it was and that should be obvious. But that is not the point of this.

The point is, this was a mare that this girls father, from what I am told had paid over $120,000 so this girl could compete at a level that she wanted to compete at. When my youth rider went up to offer her friend her condolences on her mare. This young 12-14 year old girl looked my rider in the eye, smiled and said "That's OK, my daddy will buy me another horse".

That made me sick. Never in my life would I have ever imagined a child being taught that a life has only a monetary value and nothing more. I realized that day that there is a mind set out there that we have to win at all costs, no matter what.

But why?

I can tell you the I want my daughters to have everything they want or need, but they have to know that we can not always give them that. I refuse to buy them a win at a horse show or anywhere else. They are going to have to learn to lose graciously and win humbly. As do the rest of my riders. Yes we are into showing again and I do like to win, but I also know how to lose as that is part of this game.

Like everyone else, they are going to have to work hard and develop the skills that will help them achieve their goals. I still see it all of the time at shows, parents sparing no expense to give their child an over all advantage over other kids just for a blue ribbon.

I have heard parents tell trainers that they have spent a lot of money, so their precious child better win. It's no wonder trainers try to cheat their way into championships.

Well I guess GL gets the prize?

So now we all need to decide what it will be!

Sure he does CCC. Like when he told the Sheriff's deputy that we had a lot of bones on the property from animals and did not specify that his Dad spent 2 years cleaning up several previous owners dead messes.

Kind of like when I told a distant cousin ata family gathering that he should see my sisters pussy cat and how it had really long grey and white hair. Was huge. Sometimes smelled really bad. And occasionally bit.

The problem was while I used the first word I forgot the cat part.
There was much mortification and humor to go around.

I meant to add that he comes by it honestly. He inherited it.

Just please stop GoLightly. It's a little extreme, even for you. After reading your threats about how you have too much dirt on me etc, etc...I thought I would try asking nicely. Please stop. There's nothing making you, I won't make all kinds of threats against you, there are no real consequences for you, but you win, OK? You WIN. Whatever punishment you think I deserve, it's been received.

All the crap about me you type all over, that's fine, giddy up. Just please stay out of my real life. I've certainly never gotten involved in anyone else's.

You caught me. It is a ploy. To get GoLightly to stop transferring her dislike of my internet self to my real life.

I had to try something new, ignoring her wasn't working.

autumnblaze said...

Seriously SB, maybe someone in your own town called on you... think of that? Hell impartial idle passersby could have called. Plus, you've rubbed plenty of people on horse forums/boards the wrong way on more than one occasion. So, maybe someone else? You just come on here accusing GL? Classy!

You post stuff. You post pictures. People see and read what you post. Some, like GL, say something. She actually means well, but you can't see that.

You worry responsible horse owners. You really do. I've seen some of your postings. I just shake my head. I won't even go there, unless you'd like to hear my suggestions.

Generally I don't care about piss fights, but this is the second time you've attacked people I like on a blog. People, I actually know off those blogs. That irritates me, espeically since BOTH instances were unfounded when it came to actual facts. Your immaturity is showing when you do that.

Quite possibly there were questionable issues on your property that a responsible horse lover who holds high standards of care regarded as subpar and called AC. No, maybe it didn't qualify as a violation.

That doesn't mean it's the most acceptable way to manage your horses.

Maybe GL, and others are just trying to tell you your standards, while yes, meeting a minimum (and believe me they're low standards... when it comes to most AC and other like underfunded, undereducated local government groups) standards are not the highest.

There is a better way.

I've always strived to meet and exceed standards personally; I like to think most people do. Mediocre is a sad way to live your life. Even sadder to subject another living breathing creature to.

GoLightly has a lot of knowledge, and experience if you'd listen. She has the horses well being in the forefront of EVERYTHING she posts. Stop being defensive and inflammatory and try to see that.

Step back take a subjective look at your management. You don't have to have millions of dollars to manage horses properly - you just have to educate yourself and care to be responsible.

P.S. I could care less if you respond; I will not respond to you. I refuse to have a pissing match with you. I have seen on several occasions on several blogs/boards, with several different posters how you handle disagreements. I'm sure you won't see what I'm trying to say to you and I'm not fightig with you about it. I've said my piece. Take it or leave it.

bhm said...

There's no way that GL called AC or CA. Unless you can prove it's her I'd suggest that you stop accusing GL of criminal actions.

Dena said...

Internet crap brought into someone/anyones real life causes a lot of problems.
Anxiety, frustration, irritation, and a destroying of peace, just to name a few.

We have all seen this happen more than once and to more than one person.
The worst part of it is you can think you know, absolutely KNOW, who did what, but there is always a small percentage of room for error.

People who act based on their opinions of situations that have proven to be beyond their ability to actually KNOW much of anything is just plain wrong.

I cannot count the times I have been reported by people who knew my name and address but were not able to describe their complaint beyond "someone like her should not be allowed to have horses or children."

Don't bother asking how I know as that should be obvious.

All of the concerned citizens who jumped in their cars and truck to come and invade our peace with their cameras and reckless driving to escape actually talking to us.
All while trying to hide their faces of course.
Based on words on the internet.

SB I am sorry you are experiencing these things.
I am sorry you think it is GL.
Because I can't see it.

Oh I can see her giving what for here or there.
But I can't see her trying to ruin or negatively impact someones real life over disagreements here or there.

It is a miserable cycle to live through. As I and several others can attest to.
And all I can really say is, I am so sorry you find this happening to you.

horspoor said...

Dena, do you think anyone has even showed up to her home? Or called AC?

kestrel said...

Well, SB DID say it was a ploy...for attention maybe? Sorry SB, you're just not that important.

Dena said...

I don't know HP. I do not think making up that kind of negative information applied to ones own life is something SB would do.

It raises the type of speculation that people do not usually want directed at themselves.

I do not believe that GL is responsible. But if you are asking me do I think that SB has dealt with some of that?
I would have to say, yes. Based on what she presented.
I am not there so it is not possible for me to know for a fact.

I once stumbled across one of his documents in his home office stamped "Eyes Only, Destroy After Reading"
It was snatched out of my hands so fast smoke was coming off the paper. Then Makoto rubbed my head and said "You are just the cutest (Kawaiii!) little security leak around." Fun thing to say to a 6 foot tall woman who out weighs him by 40 pounds.

Dena: "CSE I hesitate to ask this question. But have you ever seen a dog come out of the paralysis stage of lymes?
And have quality of life without relapse?
The odds didn't seem to be good.
So I made a decision of best interest separate from sentiment.
I hesitate to ask because the truth is I will always wonder."

Honestly here we usually see dogs in the very early stages of Lyme disease. It's endemic here and any dog presenting with a limp or a sore joint automatically gets a snap test and if it's positive, starts doxycycline ASAP.

I know we usually refer things like tick paralysis (different from lyme disease) to the local 24-hour animal hospital and the dogs get IV antibiotics and supportive care for a couple of days. AFAIK they usually recover OK, but my experience is extremely limited. You obviously made the best decision you could for your dog, there is no point in questioning it now.

I may not like you but as a dog owner myself I find it hard to believe that anyone who truly loves their dog would do anything they didn't believe was in the dog's best interest.

My own old dog just had a toe amputated yesterday and he is in rough shape. Possible lung mets as well. Needless to say I am taking a vacation day to stay home with him. Non-animal-lovers wouldn't get it.

The only difference I can think is that I would probably choose to euthanize him at the vet's rather than shoot him, but that may also be a regional thing. And I'm much more familiar with chemical euthaniasia hence much more comfortable with it.

Plus I'm really good at shooting clays which does NOT translate to one accurate shot for immediate death!

Dena said...

CSE the paralysis was profound and longlasting.
Research indicated that there was no guarantee that IV antibiotics would appropriately effect and there were other serious issues that could come from that type of treatment.

I do not know that shooting is a regional thing.
I know if I had $600+ in the checking account that was not designated for hay and other feed supplies I would have just wrote the check.

2 to the head and 1 to the heart in very rapid succession.

I just can't make that bond. One is eventually going to be a guardian at a sanctuary.
The other 2 shall have to make do with my husband and son.

I have my 9 year old cat that I have had since her mother a stray I fostered gave birth in the middle of my bed.

I have a new bed. I just do not feel up to a new dog.

I hope your dog recovers well. And thanks for sharing your experience.

Please leave this topic alone. I am sure we have all gone through putting animals down.

Kaede said...

JR I'm going to put my 2 cents in then drop the topic.
Until I married my husband everyone I knew kept a handgun to shoot their pets. (We weren't doing target practice. I don't find that joke remotely funny) It was considered kinder. If you dog got hit by a car it was much faster than scooping the dog up and driving to the vets and waiting.
Dena, you did the right thing and showed your child strength and compassion in action.

GoLightly said...

I Just had the GREATEST idea!
Here ya go, SB.
I'll help you find whomever this moron is.
I have this cool little app that shows me who/how many/from where "pings" my blog. (Believe me, the numbers are berry berry low.)
That's how I knew where you come from.

There has been someone else EXACTLY from your area pinging, that has a different IP from the two I've noted were yours. Also has a different OS.
e-mail me, and I'll send you the IP address.
THAT could be your "stalker".
Or, it's you, hoping I'll say something nasty about you again, on my blog.
This blog is called "The Gloves are Off".
I always take my gloves off, when I post here.

and yeah, what AB said, thanks, AB.

I just want to see happy, well-ridden, well-cared-for horses out there.
So, shoot me.

Good luck with your foal.
I'm glad & relieved your mare foaled easily. Clever mare.
But, please, don't post pics of a foal at 12 hours old.
Not much can be told from such early pictures.
Don't set yourself up for nasty critiques, when the foal is bound to change markedly, anyway..

To Being Nice.
It's an art.

Dena said...

I think what CSE was saying was that even though she was proficient in target practice she didn't feel proficient in providing a sure and kind death by means of a bullet.
I can relate to that.

I don't think she dislikes me really. I think I just frustrate her in that I can be very hard to nail down and understand absolutely.

And I am a dink when it comes to answering questions that I feel have been posed as a challenge or to expose me.

As I no longer identify myself with organized rescue I no longer feel compelled to present myself in anything other than a truthful light.
Actually I never did.

I think that was part of the problem that some had with me.
I do not pander.
I try not to misrepresent.

And I have never possessed the restraint to not eventually say exactly what I think.

My record reflects that inability.

I did ask the question after all and she answered it to the best of her ability.

And I now know I am not the only one.
Which I knew before but it still helps.
So thank you everyone.

We need a new topic JR.

I would like to know what is considered proper shoeing for a reining horse.

I would also like to know the history of gingering.
I want to know what imbecile first thought sticking their finger and a irritating substance up an equines ass was a good idea.
God knows that there have been many imbeciles to follow.

Bingo! That summed up what has happened here on this blog in regard to my life very succinctly.

>>> "I would also like to know the history of gingering.

" <<<

To the best of my recollection, gingering Arabian Halter horses came into vogue right around the time that the Boggs boys showed up on the National scene in a big way during the early-mid 1980's (*Padron, Arn Ett Perlane, etc). Before that time, we never knew of ginger. Horses carried themselves naturally in the 60's and 70's (as well as before, but of course that was before my time). Basically everyone did it in the 80's. Thank goodness it's not commonplace anymore with most folks. As soon as I branched out on my own and wasn't working for another trainer as an assistant, I swore off that horrid practice.

Btw, there is a new topic on this blog. ;) Right here.

I know this can't to be true, but I just have these visions of big tough gang members surrounded by snakes chasing them back to the prison.

I believe that gingering has been going on as long as ginger has been around. I've found a reference to it in an 1811 dictionary (English slang). Live eels could also be used.
If the practice was so well developed as to been put in a dictionary back then (took a lot longer for a new word to get into a dictionary 200 years ago) it been a well established practice.
The ginger was used by horse sellers to make an old/worn out horse look and behave like a lively young horse.

SFTS said...

I explicitly specified "Arabian Halter horses" in my response as a preemptive action, lest there be a claim about ginger being used in other breeds first, or for other applications in horses.

But Dave and Bobby seem to be the instigation for it's use/over use in the Arabian Halter world.

Don't know about other breeds that may use it/have used it, I don't show those breeds.

I personally don't believe you play with rattlesnakes, just as I don't play with Black Mambas. JR, just to clarify, I was answering Dena's question if I had ever seen Lyme paralysis resolve in a dog.

I only work PT at the vet clinic so I've probably missed some things, but as I stated, we're in one of the bigbigbig states for Lyme, our clientele is urban/suburban and relatively able to pay for basic tests, and we do a snap (C6) test in-house on any dog that presents with sudden onset limping and/or swollen lymph nodes.

If the test is positive we do 2 months (I think) of oral doxycycline and sometimes send out blood for the Lyme C6 quant blood test to the lab. We turf any serious cases requiring 24-hour care to the local 24-hr animal hospital. So no, I personally do not know of any cases of Lyme paralysis, let alone the care and treatment thereof.

As for shooting vs chemical euthanasia, yeah, generally every client at the clinic chooses chemical euth. As I said, we're sub/urban and the state has some very stringent gun laws. I shoot clays, which is more of a point-and-shoot-with-birdshot-and-if-you're-in-the-general-area-you-hit-it kinda thing, but were it up to me I would not be able to aim a weapon at my own pet. Totally personal opinion.

I apologized to Dena for asking the initial question the way I did. I assumed things that were probably not true. Again, I am sorry.

When I read things and assume from those things, I can get all het up and post shit that comes off rude. If there's one thing I will not tolerate it's suboptimal animal care and that sets me off.

Sorry, JR, CCC is thinking on the same page as me.

I have weird dislikes of certain numbers.

Yup, the Battle of Hastings.
1066, a very bad year..
